| Can I telnet to my account?
No - telnet is disabled on our servers. We have an alternative - it's called SSH. |

| What is SSH?
SSH is an alternative protocol to telnet called Secure Shell. The biggest difference is that SSH is encrypted. Secure Shell (SSH), also known as Secure Socket Shell, is a UNIX-based command interface and protocol for securely getting access to a remote computer. SSH is actually a suite of three utilities - slogin, ssh, and scp - that are secure versions of the earlier UNIX utilities, rlogin, rsh, and rcp. SSH commands are encrypted and secure in several ways. Both ends of the client/server connection are authenticated using a digital certificate, and passwords are protected by being encrypted. SSH uses RSA public key cryptography for both connection and authentication. SSH2, the latest version, is a proposed set of standards from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). |

| Who can login via SSH?
When we setup your account, we enabled SSH access to the machine for the login ID we setup for you. Each account you added must be allowed SSH access by SPECIFICALLY checking the box "Allow Telnet" on their account details. Even though we do not allow "telnet", SSH is now known as "telnet" to the web based front-end of your account control panel. Allowing a login telnet, will allow SSH. Denying telnet will deny SSH access to the server. |

| Why do we no longer support telnet?
We decided to remove telnet access from our shell server due to inherent security problems with that protocol. When data is transferred using the telnet protocol all data is sent in clear text. This means it is possible for a third party to "sniff" all traffic sent during a telnet session, including usernames and passwords. SSH on the other hand encrypts all data sent during a session. Although neither Windows or Mac operating systems come with an SSH client, SSH is rapidly becoming the standard for accessing UNIX-type systems due to the above security concerns. |

| How do I run SSH?
To run SSH connections to servers, you should get an SSH client. This is a small program which can even used as a replacement for the telnet program on your computer. |
